The OA Awesome House: a case study

Turning a 1927 1,200 sf home into a 3,500 sf home in under four months is no easy feat, let alone in the dead of winter. Achieving 1 ACH with over half the home intact and certifying GreenStar Gold, upped the ante. The house boasts no-VOC finishes, cutting-edge smart home technology, cabinetry from Finland that uses 49% less material and a wall that is so resilient we dubbed it “The Awesome Wall.” This session will review the materials, systems, and process used to achieve our goals. Drawings and specifications for wall sections included, because they are... awesome!

Mold: a building science approach

When mold problems are discovered in a property, it’s valuation begins plunging towards zero. A proper diagnosis and appropriate repairs and modifications are urgently needed. Waves of public concern have spawned a lucrative mold abatement industry that has fleeced the public and the insurance companies for big bucks. Ridiculous diagnoses and expensive and often ineffective repairs have been the result. This session will take a building science approach. Case studies will demonstrate some common indoor mold problems and dos and don’ts in dealing with them, safely, effectively and affordably.
